By eating a healthy diet, you will be able to improve your overall health, including the health of your hair. Giving preference to just one or two foods can result in poor nutrition and will affect your hair growth. Here are foods that you can include in your diet for hair growth.

Whole Grains

Whole grains contain many different nutrients that help in hair growth. They contain iron, selenium, magnesium, and B vitamins. You require B vitamins such as thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and folate for hair growth. According to the American Heart Association, whole grains can provide all the B nutrients. Brown rice, bulgur and oats are three members of the whole grain family that are particularly rich in the hair-growing nutrient, biotin. Other whole grains you can include in your diet for hair growth include wheat barn, oat bran, cornmeal, buckwheat, whole wheat, millet, triticale, etc. consuming whole grain products rather than refined flour products will help.

Green Vegetables

A lot of green vegetables are sources of hair-growing nutrients. Dark, leafy greens are rich in various hair growth nutrients such as iron and vitamin C. Iron helps carry oxygen in your blood, and its deficiency is one of the main causes of hair loss, according to the Mayo Clinic. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant that is required for the growth of your hair and tissue. Leafy greens include spinach, endive, collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, red leaf lettuce, etc. Eat other green vegetables including broccoli and asparagus to add sufficient amounts of iron in your diet.


Soybeans are a natural food that can aid in hair growth. They are classified as legumes and contain large amounts of iron, according to the National Institutes of Health. You can get iron by eating raw soybeans as a snack or adding them to your salads, or eating some roasted soybeans, also known as soynuts. Include soybeans in the soups and casseroles that you make, or prepare a bean salad. Other products that contain soy include tofu, soy milk, tempeh, and miso. Eat meatless entrees, such as loafs, crumbles and burgers to get your soy.

Lean Protein

Since your hair mostly consists of protein, you can help its growth by eating protein-rich foods. Lean protein provides nutrients without the saturated fat and cholesterol, states the American Heart Association. The choice of protein sources you have include fish, meat, poultry, low fat dairy foods, wheat germ, etc.
