Hair Growth Diet—Top 3 Foods for Healthy Hair

A healthy diet enables the growth of stronger healthier cells throughout the body—inside and outside. If you have fine, thin hair by birth, regardless of what you eat, you’ll never have rope-thick tresses. But, a well-balanced diet containing plenty of growth-promoting protein and iron can be helpful, according to nutrition and hair experts.
And beware of dietary supplements that claim to thicken hair or increase their rate of growth, as they may backfire.
According to a Paradi Mirmirani, a Vallejo, California-based dermatologist, you should try to obtain nutrients from foods whenever possible even though you there are beauty supplements available in the market. It is a rarity, but excess supplementation of certain nutrients, such as vitamin A, has been linked to hair loss.
Here are the top three foods that should form the basis of your hair growth diet for healthy hair.

No. 1: Salmon

When it comes to beauty enhancing foods, it’s hard to find one that’s better than salmon. This high-quality protein food is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B-12 and iron.
According to Andrea Giancoli, MPH, RD, a Los Angeles-based dietitian and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, essential omega-3 fatty acids are required for supporting scalp health, and a deficiency can result in a dry scalp and thus hair, making it appear dull.

Vegetarians can use plant-based omega-3 fats by including one or two tablespoons of ground flaxseed in their daily diet.

No. 2: Dark Green Vegetables

While Popeye the Sailor Man had other reasons for eating all that spinach, he could have used it for growing healthy hair. Spinach, like broccoli and Swiss chard, is an excellent source of vitamins A and C, which is required by the sebaceous glands to produce sebum (a substance responsible for keeping the hair and skin moisturized). The oily substance is our body’s natural hair conditioner. Dark green vegetables also provide iron and calcium.

No. 3: Beans

You may be surprised to know this, but it’s a fact that beans are good for hair. You should definitely include legumes such as kidney beans and lentils in your hair growth diet. Not only do they contain a lot of protein for promoting hair growth, but ample biotin, iron and zinc as well. Although a rarity, biotin deficiencies can make your hair brittle. According to Blatner, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, you should eat three or more cups of lentils or beans every week.
