When it comes to beautiful hair, both diet and hair care is important.Image by, courtesy of Jody McNary  The rate of hair growth varies from person to person, and there are a number of factors that can affect this rate. Though it’s impossible to exceed ones genetic capacity of hair growth, there are a number of things you can do for accelerated hair growth.

Protein Intake

Our hair is composed of protein, and a deficiency of protein can inhibit hair growth. Sources of protein include meat, fish, poultry, cheese, soy and dairy products.

Herbal Supplements

Herbal supplements, such as flaxseed oil and primrose oil will supercharge healthy hair growth by providing the required amino acids, L-Cysteine and L-methionine in excess of what changes in diet can alone. Do consult your doctor before taking any supplements though to know what your body requires.

Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins B, C and E complexes are vital in the production of hair. You can take these in supplement form as well.

For accelerated hair growth, consume 150 mg of Biotin daily either from foods or supplements. Some foods that provide Biotin include oats, brown rice, lentils, and walnuts.

Hair Stimulation

Research done recently by the Oregon Health and Science University shows that slight damage to hair from exposure to low-level laser energy can increase hair growth rate.

Cutting of Hair

The split ends at the bottom of your hair slow down hair growth, so they need to be cut. Also, in some extreme cases, split ends can stop hair growth altogether. Take a good look at your hair and remove the portion that is split, fried, or damaged.

Natural Oil Build Up

One of the easiest ways you can encourage your hair to grow is to let its natural oils build up. Creating a gap of three to four days between shampooing will enable natural oils to strengthen and fortify your hair, which will create ideal conditions for accelerated hair growth.

Avoid Heat

For faster hair growth, it is important that the new hair you are growing remains healthy and undamaged. This means avoiding hair dryers, hot curling irons, and steam-powered straighteners. While cutting off your dead ends may give your hair an initial growth boost, the worst thing is for the ends to split again, resulting in another hair cut.

Natural Conditioners

Although many good chemical-based conditioners are available, if you want accelerated hair growth naturally, try using natural conditioners such as olive oil or almond oil. Apply these oils to your scalp, work them through from the roots to the tips of your hair and leave on for 20 minutes. You can then rinse or shampoo them out.
